Faculty of Law

Our tour begins at the imposing Faculty of Law building of the University of Buenos Aires. This neoclassical masterpiece, inaugurated in 1949, stands as a testament to Argentina’s commitment to education and justice. The monumental 40,000m² structure features a Doric style with minimal ornamentation, housing a museum, picture gallery, and specialist library.

The Faculty of Law has played a crucial role in shaping Argentina’s political landscape, having educated sixteen of the country’s presidents and one Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Carlos Saavedra Llamas. As we admire its grand facade, we can appreciate the building’s significance in nurturing some of Argentina’s most influential legal minds.

Embassy District

As we run along Avenida del Libertador, we enter the prestigious Embassy District. This area is known for its magnificent mansions, many of which now serve as embassy headquarters. The architecture here is heavily influenced by French classicism of the 17th and 18th centuries, earning Buenos Aires the nickname “the Paris of South America”. These structures showcase the opulent lifestyle of Argentina’s past elite and the country’s strong European influences.

Plaza Alemania and Plaza Sicilia

Our route takes us through Plaza Alemania, a beautiful park designed by French landscape architect Caros Thais in 1914. The centerpiece of this park is an impressive monument-fountain called “Riqueza Agropecuaria Argentina” (Argentine Agricultural Wealth), donated by the German community in 1910. As we continue, we pass through the adjacent Plaza Sicilia, another charming green space that adds to the area’s European flair.

Galileo Galilei Planetarium

Next, we arrive at the iconic Galileo Galilei Planetarium, locally known as Planetario. Inaugurated in 1966, this architectural marvel stands as a symbol of Argentina’s interest in science and astronomy. The building features five floors, six staircases, and a 20-meter diameter room with 360 seats. The planetarium houses fascinating collections, including a piece of lunar rock brought back by the Apollo 11 mission and gifted by Richard Nixon1. Its unique design and educational programs have made it a beloved landmark in Buenos Aires’ cultural landscape.

The Rosedal (Rose Garden)

Our tour continues through the beautiful Rosedal, one of Buenos Aires’ most romantic and popular parks. Inaugurated in 1914, this century-old garden boasts over 18,000 rose bushes and has received the international Garden Excellence Award from the World Federation of Rose Societies. The Rosedal’s design includes a lake with a Greek-influenced bridge, an amphitheater, and an Andalusian Patio gifted by the city of Seville in 1929. As we run through its winding paths, we can appreciate the careful landscaping and the park’s role as a green oasis in the heart of the city.

Return to Faculty of Law

As we make our way back to our starting point at the Faculty of Law, we reflect on the rich tapestry of history, culture, and architecture we’ve encountered. This running tour has taken us through some of Buenos Aires’ most significant landmarks, showcasing the city’s European influences, commitment to education and science, and appreciation for natural beauty. From the neoclassical grandeur of the Faculty of Law to the celestial wonders of the Planetarium, and from the opulent mansions of the Embassy District to the fragrant paths of the Rosedal, we’ve experienced a diverse slice of what makes Buenos Aires a truly remarkable city.
